3rd Grade Art

Third graders studied Paul Cezanne and were inspired

by his famous still lifes. They learned about the art of

zentangle designs and value (light and dark).

Sunflowers were the focus as the students learned

about Van Gogh and his style of painting.

They used palette knives to apply paint extra thick

like Van Gogh would do.  Acrylic, modeling paste

All artists should know a thing or two about the

great Michelangelo.  Even though he was quite the

"Renaissance Man", he considered himself a sculptor

at heart.  Students had the opportunity to try their

hand at sculpture on balsa wood in his honor.

After looking at the incredible work of ceramic

artist Andy Rogers, the third graders created their

own textured clay bulbs inspired by his style.  They

glazed with special crystal glazes to give them a

speckled and unexpected look.

These one of a kind butterflies were an interesting way

of exploring symmetry when designing the wings and value

in the color blending.  Students were also able to learn to

make a "cane" with polymer clay when constructing the

body of the butterfly.

As a special surprise gift for Mother's Day, each third grader

made their mother a teacup and saucer using the coil

method of handbuilding techniques.  They glazed the two

pieces to be a unified set.
