4th Grade Art

Fourth graders learned about Tibetan sand mandalas

which are a Buddhist tradition involving the creation and

destruction of mandalas made from colored sand.

Students created their own unique mandalas using

colored pencil and sharpies.

A fresco is an ancient technique of applying paint to                                                                                wet plaster and a fresco secco is applying paint to

dry plaster.  4th graders made their own "aged"

fresco secco after learning about Michelangelo and

his use of frescoes during the Italian Renaissance.

These watercolor paintings demonstrate the wet-on-wet

watercolor technique with glue and sharpie added for

an interesting effect.

Students made fun ceramic birdbaths out of clay

using the pinch pot method of handbuilding.  They learned

to score and slip to attach clay and glazed when the

piece was finished.

Venetian masks were the inspiration for these

original and creative mask projects.  They each had

to start with a theme, follow a color scheme, and

manipulate paper and other materials to create a

decorative, sculptural piece of art.

This started out as a printing project.  The students created

a printing plate with a string design on cardboard and

printed it four times in a circular formation.  That created

the black design.  The color was done with oil pastel and

included a lesson on blending analogous colors with

pastel.
